DIY - 01 - SHED

(See Progression in pictures below)

When I decided to build a shed, I wanted something that would not only provide functional storage but also complement the Cape Cod charm of our home. After weeks of planning, gathering materials, and hard work, I completed a 16-foot by 8-foot shed that now holds about two cords of firewood and all our gardening tools.

With clapboard siding, operational windows, a double door, proper ventilation, and even power for lighting, this project became both a practical and beautiful addition to our property—all for under $4,000.

The project started with clearing and leveling the ground, ensuring a solid foundation (with liberal concrete blocks ... about every 36" apart) for long-term durability.

I used pressure-treated lumber for the base and framing, making it capable of withstanding the elements. Clapboard siding was an essential feature to seamlessly match our home's exterior.

I also installed ridge and soffit vents, which provide excellent airflow to prevent moisture buildup and keep our stored items in great condition.

One of the most rewarding additions was bringing power to the shed. I ran an underground electrical conduit from the main house to the shed, allowing me to install interior lighting and outlets.

These outlets not only provide the convenience of powering tools and equipment but also make the shed a festive focal point during the holidays with outdoor Christmas lights. Interior lighting transforms the shed into a functional workspace at night, which has been invaluable for organizing tools or accessing firewood during the darker winter months.

The two operational windows and double door were installed to combine style with practicality. The windows flood the space with natural light during the day, while the wide double doors make it easy to move larger items in and out. These design elements tie in with the classic Cape Cod aesthetic and enhance the overall appeal of our backyard.

Building this shed was a rewarding three-week DIY project that taught me a great deal about time management, precision, and creative problem-solving.

Whether you’re looking for backyard storage solutions, a way to enhance your property with a Cape Cod-style shed, or a DIY project to build your skills, this experience showed me that with the right plan and determination, anyone can create something functional and beautiful.
